Dos Equis was created in 1897 in the city of Orizaba, Mexico by the Mexican brewing company the Moctezuma Brewery. Moctezuma was founded in 1890 by Wilhelm Hesse, who had recently immigrated to Mexico from his native Germany. The beer was originall known as “Siglo XX,” which means “Twentieth Century” in Spanish, to commemorate the upcoming new century. However, the brand came to be known by the two prominent X’s on the bottle, as guests began ordering the “cerveza dos equis,” or “two X beer.”
In 1985, Cervecería Moctezuma merged with Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, which brewed brands like Indio, Carta Blanca, Tecate, and Bohemia. The merged brewery became known as Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma.
Two years prior to that, Moctezuma had begun exporting Dos Equis to the United States, where it slowly began to gain popularity. In 2006, Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma began the “Most Interesting Man in the World” campaign, which featured the many exploits of actor Jonathan Goldsmith. The campaign became an internet meme, and has been widely hailed as one of the most successful beer ads of all time. During this time, Dos Equis rapidly expanded its growth, attracting interest from buyers for Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma. In 2010, the brewery became a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., a Dutch multinational brewing company. The deal was valued at about $5.5 billion in an all-shares transaction, and solidified Heineken as the world’s number two producer of beer by sales, behind Belgian company Anheuser-Busch InBev.
